RICHMOND, Va. – The Ohio field hockey team (5-3) returned to action on Sunday afternoon, falling to VCU (6-3), 3-0, in Richmond, Va.
Overall, both teams registered eight shots with five on goal, while Ohio recorded five corners to VCU's three.
Individually, freshman
Mijntje Ligtenberg led the Bobcats with four shots with all four on goal. Junior
Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) added two shots with one on goal, while senior
Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) and freshman
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) both had one shot.
In goal, graduate student
Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) played all 60 minutes, allowing three goals and making two saves.
The Bobcats opened the game with momentum, generating several changes over the opening five minutes. However, VCU struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Ohio kept up the pressure over the rest of the quarter, but the VCU defense held strong, sending the game to the second quarter with Ohio trailing 1-0.
The second quarter saw both teams generate chances, however neither team registered a goal, sending the game to the half with the Bobcats trailing, 1-0.
At the half, both teams recorded four shots, while Ohio recorded three shots on goal to the Rams' two. Ohio also recorded three corners to VCU's one. Ligtenberg led the Bobcats at half with two shots and two one goal.
The Bobcats worked to battle back over the opening minutes of the third quarter, however, VCU struck again in the 44
th minute, extending their lead to 2-0. The Rams added on in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, taking a 3-0 lead. The Bobcats generated chances over the remaining minutes, however Ohio was unable to get on the board, falling by the final of 3-0.
The Bobcats are back in Athens on Friday, Sept 30 when they host Kent State. First touch is set for 2 p.m. at Pruitt Field.
