ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio field hockey team (2-0) returned to action on Friday afternoon (sept. 2), defeating Central Michigan (1-2), 5-2, in a nonconference matchup in Ann Arbor, Mich. at Ocker Field. Senior
Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) led Ohio offensively with three goals and an assist.
Overall, Ohio recorded 22 shots to CMU's six, with nine of those registering on goal. Ohio also recorded eight corners to CMU's two, while in net, Ohio registered three total saves to CMU's four.
Along with Whittle's three goals on five shots and one assist, freshman
Mijntje Ligtenberg scored a goal on five shots with three on goal, while freshman
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) added one goal on two shots. Freshman
Anouk Plaehn (Lower Saxony, Germany) registered four shots, while sophomore
Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium) added one assist.
In goal, graduate student
Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) played all 60 minutes, allowing two goals and made three saves on six shots faced.
After CMU opened the match with the first goal in the third minute, the Bobcats defense caught fire, dominating the remainder of the first half.
Whittle got the Bobcats on the board moments later, knotting the game at 1-1 in the sixth minute. Four minutes later, Ligtenberg gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game thanks to an assist from Whittle.
The Ohio offense wasn't finished in the first half. With Dikotla picking up her first career goal in the 15
th minute, before Whittle added her second goal of the match in the 21
st minute, giving Ohio a 4-1 lead going into halftime.
At the half, Ohio outshot CMU, 15-4, with five penalty corners to CMU's two.
Whittle continues to fill the case in the third quarter, scoring in the 42
nd minute off an assist from Desmaretz, giving Ohio a 5-1 lead.
The Bobcats defense held strong through the remainder of the third quarter until CMU scored in the 56
thminute to cut the Ohio lead to 5-2 with four minutes to go. However, that would be re remainder of the scoring for either squad, with the Bobcats securing the 5-2 victory.
