MADRID – The Ohio men's basketball team continued their trip through Spain on Tuesday, playing their final game of the trip.
The Bobcats were back in action against the Spain Select Team, a group of professional Spanish players.
Spain Select got out to an early 17-10 lead, before the Bobcats went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 17-15. The teams traded baskets over the next five minutes, with Spain Select taking a 28-21 lead after one quarter. Ohio opened the second quarter by cutting the lead to four. After Spain Select went up eight, Ohio battled back, going on a 10-2 run, capped by a steal and a dunk from freshman
AJ Brown (Orlando, Fla.), putting Ohio up 40-38 for the first time in the contest. A three from Brown then gave Ohio a four-point lead with just under three minutes to go in the half. Back-to-back threes from freshmen
Quinn Corna (Columbus, Ohio) and
Ajay Sheldon (Dublin, Ohio) increased the Bobcats' lead to 49-39 going into the half.
At the half, Brown led with 12 points, followed by junior
Jaylin Hunter (Manchester, Conn.) with nine, while Ohio went 7-of-9 from three.
The Bobcats opened the second half, taking a 14-point lead before Spain Select cut the score to 56-46 with just under five minutes to go in the third. Spain Select then caught a rhythm, cutting the Ohio lead to four with under three minutes to go in the third. The teams traded baskets over the final few minutes, taking a 66-62 lead to the final quarter.
Spain Select took a one-point lead with six minutes to go in the game, before a jumper form freshman
Elmore James (Cleveland, Ohio) gave Ohio the lead back. Spain Select took a five-point lead with three minutes to go, After Ohio cut it to three, the Bobcats were unable to overcome fouls and free throws, falling 84-77.
Brown finished with 20 points and four rebounds, while
Dwight Wilson III (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 12 points and eight rebounds. Hunter scored 11 points, with Sheldon adding nine.
The Bobcats will finish their trip with a free day to explore Madrid tomorrow before heading back to the United States on Thursday.
