ATHENS, Ohio-- With strong pitching from fifth year Edward Kutt IV (Westlake, Calif.) and a dominant performance at the plate, the Ohio baseball team (21-19, 13-12) opened their four-game series against Akron (13-32, 11-22) with a 12-4 victory at Bob Wren Stadium (May 7).

Individually, redshirt senior Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored while redshirt freshman Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Redshirt freshman Harrison Johnson (Mason, Ohio) went 1-for-3, hitting his first collegiate home run to give the Bobcats the lead in the sixth. On the mound, Kutt IV pitched eight innings with eight strikeouts.

"The game got tight and he [Kutt IV] still went out there and did well," said head coach Craig Moore. "It was good to see him give us another quality start"

The Bobcats quickly jumped ahead, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Fifth year Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) kicked off the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI single from Harbert to give Ohio a 3-0 lead. Senior Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) rounded out the scoring with a groundout, putting Ohio up 4-0.

Akron chipped away at the Bobcats' lead, scoring one run on an error in the third and another off a sacrifice fly in the fourth. A Zips two-run home run in the sixth tied the game, but Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, giving the Bobcats a 5-4 lead. Two at-bats later, Dolan extended Ohio's lead with a two-run home run. The Bobcats didn't stop there, scoring off a Harbert fielder's choice, a single from junior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) and a double from graduate student Cael Baker (Gahanna, Ohio).

"I just thought about getting on base for my teammates and competing." said Dolan. "It ended up starting a pretty good rally."

A combined effort from Kutt and freshman Adam Beery (Ravenna, Ohio) held the Zips, securing Ohio's 12-4 victory.
