YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – With 1.9 seconds remaining and the game tied at 79-79, graduate student forward
Dwight Wilson III (Tallahassee, Fla.) received an inbound pass from senior forward
Ben Roderick Powell, Ohio) and put the ball up, with it falling through the net as time expired, giving the Ohio men's basketball team (5-4) the 81-79 victory over Youngstown State (7-4), Sunday afternoon inside the Beeghly Center.
Overall, Ohio shot 53.2 percent from the field, 45 percent from three and were 6-of-10 from the line, while YSU shot 39.7 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from three and were 14-of-15 from the line. The Bobcats outrebounded the Penguins, 40-31, while Ohio dished out 16 assists to YSU's 14.
"it's great to turn that corner and be able to get the stops when we needed to and finally get our first win on the road and get some momentum," Wilson III said. "It feels great. We're young and I want to get this team in this program back to winning at a high level. it's not an easy job but we were able to do it today."
Individually, junior guard
Jaylin Hunter (Manchester, Conn.) led Ohio with 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists, while senior guard
DeVon Baker (Dayton, Ohio) added 15 points. Freshman guard
AJ Brown (Orlando, Fla.) scored 16 points, while Wilson III and sophomore forward
AJ Clayton (Roseville, Ohio) both ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"When you go on the road, you got to find a way to win" head coach
Jeff Boals said. "And we obviously made it interesting at the end, but our guys made some big time plays and none bigger than the pass by BRod and the finish by DJ. We needed that as a program, hopefully for the better."
Ohio opened the game by winning the tip and getting on the board first, opening the game on an 8-0 run, led by four points from Hunter, forcing YSU to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Penguins got on the board, but a three from Clayton helped give the Bobcats a 13-9 lead going into the under-16 media timeout. Out of the timeout, both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, with YSU cutting the Ohio lead to two going into the next media timeout.
Out of the timeout, Ohio went on a 11-3 run with points from Wilson III,
AJ Brown, free throws from freshman guard
Elmore James (Cleveland, Ohio) and a three from Roderick, giving Ohio a 28-18 lead with 7:55 remaining in the first half. After a layup from senior guard
Miles Brown (Rochester, N.Y.), free throws from YSU cut the Ohio lead to 10. Then back-to-back threes from Hunter helped the Bobcats increase their lead to 14, before a three from YSU cut the Ohio lead to 38-27 going into the final media timeout. Out of the timeout, a layup from
Miles Brown increased Ohio's lead to 40-27. Then back-to-back layups from Hunter and
AJ Brown helped give the Bobcats a 44-31 lead going into halftime.
At the half, Ohio shot 57.6 percent from the field, 50 percent from three and hit both free throws, while YSU shot 30.6 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from three and were 6-of-6 from the line. Ohio out-rebounds YSU, 25-13, while the Bobcats dished out nine assists and had three steals.
Individually, nine Bobcats scored in the first half and were led by Hunter with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.
AJ Brown added eight points, while
Miles Brown and Baker both scored six. Wilson III led Ohio with six rebounds, followed by junior center
Gabe Wiznitzer (Walhalla, S.C.) with five.
Ohio opened the second half with a three from Baker. After YSU responded with back-to-back threes to cut the Ohio lead to 10, a three from Clayton and a jumper from Baker gave Ohio a 52-40 lead going into the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, YSU went on an 11-0 run, cutting the Ohio lead to one and forcing Ohio to call its first timeout of the game with 13:23 remaining. Out of the timeout, a layup from Wilson III gave the Bobcats a three-point lead, however a three and a layup from the Penguins gave YSU its first lead of the game with 11:56 remaining.
Out of the timeout, the teams traded baskets, with YSU taking a one-point lead with 9:32 remaining. Moments later, with the help of forced turnovers by the Ohio defense, Baker and
AJ Brown both drained threes, giving Ohio a 67-62 lead going into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the timeout, a jumper, and free throws from YSU cut the Ohio lead back to one with 3:17 to go.
Out of the timeout, YSU took a one-point lead before a three from Hunter gave the Bobcats the lead back. After YSU took another one-point lead on a free throw, a jumper from Wilson III gave the Bobcats a 77-76 lead with 43 seconds remaining. Then with 17 second to go,
AJ Brown hit two free throws to give Ohio a three-point lead with 13.5 remaining in the game. Then with under five second to go, YSU hit a three to tie the game at 79-79 with 1.9 seconds to go.
After an official's review, Wilson III received the ball from Roderick and put the ball up, with it falling through the net as time expired, giving the Bobcats the 81-79 victory.
For Youngstown State, Brandon Rush led with 26 points and six made threes, while Malek Green added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwayne Cohill added 16 points.
