Ohio Field Hockey Season Concludes Against App State

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (8-9, 3-4 MAC) concluded the 2022 season this afternoon (Oct. 28), falling to Appalachian State (12-5, 5-2 MAC), 2-1, in a Mid-American Conference showdown inside Pruitt Field. 
 
Prior to the start of the match, the Bobcats honored departing seniors Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) and Lucy Davis (Kettering, Ohio).
 
Overall, App State outshot Ohio, 15-12, with Ohio registering eight shots on goal to their seven. The Bobcats also recorded five corners to App State's three. 
 
Individually, Davis scored one goal on one shot with one on goal. Freshman Mijntje Ligtenberg (The Hague, The Netherlands) recorded four shots with two on goal, while senior Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) added two shots. Sophomore Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium), sophomore Merle Kal (Haarlem, The Netherlands), freshman Emily Risser (Palmyra, Pa.), freshman Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) and senior Weslee Littlefield (Oakland, Maine) all added shots for the Bobcats.
 
In goal, Graner played all 60 minutes, allowing two goals and making five saves. 
 
The first quarter saw both teams generate several chances over the first 10 minutes of play. Appalachian State struck in the 12th minute on a goal, putting the Mountaineers up 1-0 after the first quarter. The Bobcats opened the second quarter with back-to-back corners; however, the Ohio offense was unable to capitalize. The Ohio offense continued to generate chances in the App State zone, unfortunately, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game halftime with Ohio trailing 1-0. 
 
At the half, both teams recorded five shots and two on goal, while the Bobcats registered two corners to App State's one. 
 
The Bobcats opened the second half on fire, pushing the offense forward. The pressure finally paid off in the 39th minute, when Davis scored off a penalty corner, tying the game at 1-1 late in the third quarter. The Bobcats' defense was able to hold the Mountaineers off the board the remaining minutes of the quarter as they put press on the Bobcats, keeping the score 1-1 going to the final quarter. 
 
App State struck early in the fourth quarter, taking a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute. The Ohio offense continued to push, working to grab the equalizer over the remaining10 minute of the match, however, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on its chances, falling 2-1. 
 
The loss to App State knocked the Bobcats out of this year's MAC Tournament, concluding their season.
