ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio field hockey team (3-7, 1-1 MAC) shut out Ball State (3-6, 1-1 MAC) 3-0 game Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field. The win was Ohio's first conference win of the season and the second-straight win over the Cardinals.

The Bobcats' defense was dominant out of the gate, holding the Cardinals to just one shot on goal in very limited offensive possessions. While Ohio was keeping the ball away from its goal, the Bobcats kept consistent pressure on the Ball State net in the first half.

The key to keeping Ball State away from the net was communication on the defense.

"Communication as a unit and knowing who the off-ball player was and pushing them up to pressure," fifth year senior Jillian Shive said. "We were checking behind our shoulders and it was really key for us staying low and being aggressive."

Ohio fired 12 shots in the first half with seven on goal and four penalty corners. The Bobcats struck first with a flurry of shots finished by Shive, assisted by Leah Warren in the 17th minute.

It didn't take long for Ohio's top goal scorer to find the back of the net again as Shive scored another goal on a breakaway in the 21st minute, assisted by Noa Desmaretz.

"Ball State really compacted the middle so our key in this game was going out and around the sides," Shive said. "We were just passing right away and knowing our exits, knowing our passes because if they're coming with three people on the ball we have people open."

The Bobcats didn't change the way they played in the second half. The Ohio defense only allowed one shot on goal in the third quarter and sent two more shots at the Ball State goalkeeper.

Ohio scored its final goal as Kaelyn Long fired a shot from the left side of the goal, assisted by Tasmin Williams.

Head coach Ali Johnstone said the Bobcats are gaining confidence with each game they play. The confidence showed as Ohio took 16 total shots against Ball State.

"We have confidence with whoever has the ball to just let it rip," Johnstone said. "Not being afraid to just let it go and pick shots."

The Bobcats will take the field again with confidence next Friday, Oct. 1 at Appalachian State. The game will start at 3 p.m.
