ATHENS, Ohio – Hunter Stieber has been hired as assistant coach for the Ohio wrestling program, head coach Joel Greenlee has announced.
Â
"Hunter is a home run hire for Ohio University," explained Greenlee. "Hunter is very skilled at developing young wrestlers and is a big wrestling name in the state of Ohio. We are extremely excited to have Hunter on campus."
Â
Stieber joins the Bobcats after spending five seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for the Oklahoma Sooners. During his time in Norman, Okla., the Sooners went 38-32, including the school's first conference championship in 19 years during the 2021 campaign. Stieber assisted in the development of NCAA qualifiers Dom Demas and Justin Thomas.
Â
Prior to joining the coaching staff at Oklahoma, Stieber wrestled at Ohio State University. As a Buckeye, he was a two-time All-American at 141 pounds and three-time NCAA qualifier, Stieber was the 2013 Big Ten Champion and entered the 2013 NCAA Championships as the tournament's No. 1 seed. Stieber, who posted an impressive 36-1 record during his sophomore season, also earned All-Big 10 honors in 2013. He qualified for the 2015 NCAA Championships despite facing injury setbacks in his final two seasons as a Buckeye.
Â
Stieber also coached and was a training partner for USA Wrestling, including a Junior World Team Coach in 2018, and Senior World Team Training Partner from 2016-19.Â
Â
"I'm excited, it's good to be back in Ohio," said Stieber. "I'm looking forward to working with the team and helping them grow as student-athletes. Go Bobcats!"
