COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The Ohio field hockey team (5-9, 2-2 MAC) returned to action Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 battle to 16th-ranked Ohio State (7-5) in Columbus.Â
The Bobcats played strong in the first half after falling behind in the first quarter when the Buckeyes were awarded a penalty stroke. Ohio answered with a goal from graduate senior Kaleyn Long, who ripped a shot from the top of the circle for her third goal of the season. The Bobcats took a lead into half as senior Leah Warren knocked in a shot off a penalty corner.
Ohio created many chances and scored two of its three goals off the penalty corners. Head coach Ali Johnstone said that perfect execution is what led to the success.
"Leah's shot, we practice those, and sometimes it bounces or it rolls too fast but today every single person was doing their job perfectly," Johnstone said. "We executed which is fantastic for us, that's a really good percentage on corners."
The Buckeyes came out aggressive in the second half, quickly rattling off three goals in the third quarter and taking as two-goal lead.
Jillian Shive scored the last goal for the Bobcats in the fourth quarter as they attempted to mount a comeback. Shive's goal came off another penalty corner as she redirected a shot from Kaelyn Long into the back of the net.
The Bobcats will play again at Central Michigan on Friday (October 15) at 1 p.m. for a critical conference matchup with just two weeks left before the MAC Tournament in November.
