ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ohio softball team (0-3) continued play at the 2020 Buzz Classic on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8), falling to Furman (1-0), 10-2 in five innings.
After a three-hour delay to the start the game, Ohio recorded the first hit in top of the first inning when freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) reached on a single to center field. However, Troutman was caught stealing later in the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with the game still scoreless. Furman struck in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on a three-run homerun by Riley Ludlam.
The Bobcats responded in the top of the second inning, when with one out freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) registered her first career hit, a double to right center. Then moments later, freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) hit her first career homerun over the center field wall, cutting the Ohio deficit to 3-2.
Furman got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by Natalie Morgan to put Paladins up 4-2 after two innings. Ohio threatened in the top of the third inning when junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) reached on an error and then moved to second on a single by junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) reached on a fielder's choice and Dawe drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to push her around, sending the game to the bottom of the third with the Bobcats trailing, 4-2.
Furman added on to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits and two errors to take an 8-2 lead going into the fifth inning. After a scoreless top of the fifth for the Bobcats, Furman added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to seal the 10-2 victory.
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on six hits and committed three errors, while Furman scored 10 runs on 11 hits and committed two errors.
Individually, Troutman went 2-for-3, while Dawe added a double and a run scored. Bernard added a homerun, run scored and two RBI, while Yun and senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) also added a hit for the Bobcats.
In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) got the start, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, walked one and struck out four. Redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) entered the game and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out one.
