ST. LOUIS â€" Sophomore Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) picked up a victory in session three as the season comes to a close for the Ohio wrestling team on Friday (March 17) on day two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
After scoring three takedowns in the first period and a reversal in the third, Laney cruised to a 9-3 victory in his first consolation match of the morning session against Appalachian State’s Vito Pasone. In his second match of the session against No. 5 seed Tim Lambert of Nebraska, it was tightly contested as Lambert lead 1-0 toward the end of the second. Lambert kept lead heading into the third as he defeated Laney by fall in the third (5:57) ending his NCAA Championship run. Laney closes out the season with a 28-8 record.
Junior Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) was pitted against Oregon State’s Johnathan Hathaway. Forrider fought off a takedown attempt halfway through the first and the two combatants were tied 0-0 to start the second. Forrider fall in the second as Hathway secured a pin (3:41) ending Forrider’s run at the NCAA Championships. Forrider ends the season with a 27-8 record.
The competition continues tonight with the Championship Semifinals and All-American rounds and tomorrow (March 18) with the 3rd, 5th, and 7th place matches during the morning session and the Championship Finals during the evening session.
