ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team (6-5, 4-3 MAC) fell to No. 18 Northern Iowa (8-2, 5-0 MAC), 27-16, in Mid-American Conference play on Friday (Jan. 27) at the Convocation Center.
"I think it's a whole different dual meet if we started 125 then 165," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "I still look at those first four matches and we could win all of those. Those were all winnable for us."
165 -- Austin Reese v. Bryce Steiert
Redshirt sophomore Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) led 3-2 over No. 8 Bryce Steiert after scoring a takedown and escape in the first period. The pair started neutral in the second. Steiert scored a takedown at the 1:10 mark before pinning Reese for the victory by fall (4:03).
174 -- Arsen Ashughyan v. Taylor Lujan
Redshirt sophomore Arsen Ashughyan (Vanadzor, Armenia) scored five escapes, but could not overcome No. 9 Taylor Lujan as Lujan took the match by major decision (16-5).
184 -- Dontae McGee v. Drew Foster
Redshirt freshman Dontae McGee (Marion, Ohio) fell to No.11 Drew Foster in a major decision (12-2) as Foster scored a trio of takedowns to go with four near-fall points and an escape.
197 -- Bailey Faust v. Jacob Holschlag
Redshirt freshman Bailey Faust (Lexington, Ohio) battled the first the two periods and only trailed Holschlag 2-0 heading into the third. Holschlag started down in the third and scored a reversal to go with six near-fall points as Faust fell by major decision (11-0).
285 -- Zack Parker v. JJ Everhard
Redshirt sophomore Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) was pitted against No. 18 JJ Everhard. Everhard scored a takedown at the 1:32 mark. Everhard got injured on the takedown and could no longer wrestle and Parker was awarded the victory by forfeit.
125 -- Shakur Laney v. Jay Schwarm
No. 13 sophomore Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Jay Schwarm in a high-scoring battle. Laney led Schwarm 10-9 after the first two periods as the competitors traded reversals and Laney scored three takedowns and another reversal across the first two frames. Laney sealed the match in the third period with three more takedowns to take the match in a 17-12 decision. Laney improved his record to 22-4.
133 -- Cameron Kelly v. Josh Alber
No. 15 sophomore Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) face No. 9 Josh Alber in the lone match between ranked wrestlers on the evening. The first period ended scoreless with Kelly nearly landing a takedown as time expired in the period. Kelly started out the period on top, but Alber scored a reversal and four near-fall points to take a 6-0 lead into the third. Kelly started the third period down and scored a reversal of his own, but fell to Alber in a 7-2 decision.
141 -- Noah Forrider v. Tyler Willers
Junior Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) continued his hot streak in MAC play against Tyler Willers. Forrider scored a take down in each of the three periods and was only taken down once in 13-5 major decision. Forrider is now 22-3 on the season and is 6-1 in MAC play.
149 -- Kyle Kaminski v. Max Thomsen
Redshirt freshman Kyle Kaminski (Parma, Ohio) fell to No. 8 Max Thomsen when Thomsen scored a pin in the second period (3:39).
157 -- Cullen Cummings v. Paden Moore
Redshirt junior Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.) trailed Moore 2-1 after the first period. Cummings put together a comeback after scoring a reversal and four near-fall points in the second period to overcome the opening period deficit and take the final match of the dual in a 7-4 decision.
