ATHENS, Ohio â€" The Ohio swimming and diving team fell to Buffalo on Saturday (Jan. 23) afternoon, 185-112, in Buffalo N.Y. Ohio claimed four first-place finishes and a podium sweep in the 100-yard butterfly.
The meet started with the 200-yard medley relay where the ‘A’ team of Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio), Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Eng.) and Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) placed second in 1:45.19. The ‘B’ team of Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.), Ariel Hodges (Warren, Mich.), Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) took fourth in 1:48.38. The ‘C’ team of Katie Lemen (Carmel, Ind.), Kelse Johnson (Centennial, Colo.), Maddie Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) and Lexie White took sixth in 1:52.62.
Next up was the 1000-yard freestyle. Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) took third in 10:30.47 while Bianca Hauzer (Bedfordview, South Africa) and Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio) took fourth and fifth respectively with times of 10:35.89 ad 10:50.47.
The third event was the 200-yard freestyle. Dawson took second in 1:52.91, Lemen took fourth in 1:56.62, Josephine Barker took fifth in 1:57.53 and Kimberly Zehnder took sixth in 1:57.60.
Ohio claimed its first win of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke when Ferguson touched in at 56.95. Raley followed in third with a time of 58.12 while Myriah Ariza-Balter (Evergreen, Colo.) took fifth in 1:00.12 and White took eighth in 1:09.55.
Next was the 100-yard breaststroke where Hornstra claimed second in 1:07.02, Hodges took fourth in 1:08.17 and Johnson took fifth in 1:09.02.
The sixth event was the 200-yard butterfly where Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) took fourth in 2:06.40, Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) took fifth in 2:08.87, Wyke claimed sixth in 2:09.70 and Carrie Dukes took seventh in 2:13.05.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Van Lanen claimed third in 23.75, Clark claimed fifth in 24.59, Zehnder took sixth in 25.51 and Ferguson took seventh in 25.87.
In the first diving event of the day, the 1-meter, Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) took third with a score of 258.83 while Olivia Dillion placed fifth with a score of 228.60.
Next was the 100-yard freestyle where Van Lanen took second in 52.00 flat. Clark, White and Barker took fifth, sixth and seventh respectively with final times of 54.37, 54.61 and 55.13.
The tenth event was the 200-yard backstroke where Dawson claimed Ohio’s second first place spot, touching in at 2:02.65, Raley came in third in 2:07.18 while Zehnder and Ariza-Balter took fifth and sixth respectively with times of 2:09.50 and 2:10.14.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hornstra placed third in 2:23.13, Gyurke took fourth in 2:25.90, Johnson took fifth in 2:27.11 and Hodges took sixth, touching in at 2:30.96.
Next up was the 500-yard freestyle where Henderson took fourth in 5:06.65, Hauzer took fifth in 5:14.88, Barker took sixth in 5:19.05 and Lemen took seventh in 5:19.23.
Event 13 was the 100-yard butterfly where Ohio swept the podium, Ferguson claimed first with a time of 57.32 while Patz followed in second with a time of 58.38 and Dukes took third in 58.58. Wyke (59.04), Davis (59.06) and Raley (1:03.79) also competed but did not place for the event.
The second diving competition, the 3-meter, followed with Bartlett taking first with a score of 296.78. Dillon took fifth with a score of 2:18.40.
Next up was the 200-yard IM where Gyurke took second in 2:08.95, Johnson took fifth in 2:11.41, Dawson took sixth in 2:11.81 and Patz took seventh in 2:14.45. Hodges finished with a time of 2:16.73 but did not place for the event.
The last event of the day was the 400-yard freestyle relay. Ohio’s ‘A’ team of Clark, Barker, Henderson and Van Lanen took second with a time of 3:33.08. The ‘B’ team of Hauzer, Hornstra, Zehnder and Lemen followed in third with a final time of 3:35.17.
The Bobcats wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they take on MAC foe Ball State. The meet is set to being at 1 p.m. at the Ohio University Aquatics Center and will serve as the Bobcats’ Senior Day.
