LEXINGTON, K.y. - The Ohio softball team took on No. 12 Kentucky in a double-header on Saturday afternoon. In the rematch of the 2014 NCAA Regionals, the Bobcats battled hard, but dropped both game to the Wildcats, falling in game one 7-2 and game two 6-4 inside John Cropp Stadium.
In game one, Ohio jumped on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) scored on an RBI single through the left side by Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, M.D.).
Kentucky (17-5) got the run back, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Darington Richardson scored on an RBI double by Maisie Steed.
The Bobcats regained the lead in the top of the next frame when Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) to put Ohio up 2-1.
The Wildcats would immediately respond, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Sylver Samuel scored when Steed walked with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Kentucky would take control of the game, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Kentucky would score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and then one more in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wildcats the 7-2 win.
At the plate, the Bobcats had six hits, led by Gebele who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Walker went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Cooper added the Bobcats other RBI to the stat sheet. Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) and Hutchinson would each add a hit for the Bobcats.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) went four and a third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out four. Sydney Compston (Wellston, Ohio) pitched one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
In the second game of the twin bill, the Bobcats once again got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Clarke hit a solo homerun to leftfield.
Ohio added on in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. The scoring began when Raven King (Alpine, Utah) singled to center, scoring Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) from third. King and Clarke would score on the next batter when Gebele hit a two-run single up the middle to put the Bobcats on top, 4-0.
After keeping the Kentucky offense at bay for four innings, the Wildcats' offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting a five-spot on the board and takings a 5-4 lead. Kentucky would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth and would take the game by a 6-4 final.
At the plate, Ohio had seven hits, led by Clarke who was 2-for-3 with a homerun, an RBI and two runs scored. King also went 2-for-3 at the plate, registering an RBI and a run scored. Gebele added a hit and two RBIs, while Walker and Dalton both added hits for the Bobcats.
In the circle, Clarkepitched all six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out three.
