GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Ohio softball team dropped two heartbreakers against Furman this afternoon. The Bobcats fell 6-5 in game one of the double-header and fell 6-5 in eight innings in game two.
In game one of the twin bill, Furman got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Andrea Abbatiello scored on an illegal pitch.
The Bobcats responded quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. The inning because with a lead off single to right center by Sam Bowlsbey (Farmingdale, N.J.) Later in the inning, Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) singled to the pitcher and Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio)walked to load the bases. Then with the bases loaded and two outs, Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) roped a double to left center, scoring Bowlsbey and Walker from second and third, and putting Ohio up 3-1.
Furman added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Courtney Jacobs to cut the Bobcat lead to 3-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, Ohio added to its lead on a two-run homerun by Raven King (Alpine, Utah) to make the score 5-2.
In the bottom of the frame, Furman scored a run on an Elise Smith homerun to left center, making the score 5-3. Unfortunately, the Bobcat lead was not safe, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Furman would score three runs and give the Paladins the 6-5 walk-off win.
Offensively, had 10 hits, led by Walker who went 2-for-3 with two hits and a run scored and King finished game one 2-for-3 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run scored. Hutchinson also helped the Bobcats at the plate, with one double and three RBIs.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) pitched six and a third innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out four. Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) came in relief and pitched a third of an inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
In game two of the double-header, the game was scoreless for three and a half frames until the bottom of the fourth inning whenFurman struck first, going up 2-0 on a two-run homerun by Sieara Bishop.
However, the Bobcats clawed back, and took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The scoring began when Clarke scored when Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, M.D.) reached on an error by the short stop. Later in the inning, Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed King to score on a throwing error by the pitcher and tie the game at 2-2. The next batter, Walker, singled to leftfield, scoring Plyes and giving Ohio the 3-2 lead.
The Paladins tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame on a Lindsey Bert homerun.
Ohio quickly responded in the top of the sixth inning when King hit her second two-run homerun of the day, putting the Bobcats up by 5-3.
Furman tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bishop hit a two-run RBI double to right center, tying the game at 5-5. The Paladins would win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Katharine Olson scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Ambree Muller, giving Furman the 6-5 victory.
At the plate, the Bobcats had seven hits and were led by King who went 2-for-3 with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored. Walker went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Clarke recorded a double.
In the circle, Clarke pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out two. Leanna Bachman (Carroll, Ohio) pitched an inning and allowed two hits and McClary pitched two and two-third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three.
Ohio (4-6) and Furman (6-2) wrap up its three game series on Saturday, Feb. 28. First pitch is set 2 p.m.
