COLUMBUS, Ohio â€" The Ohio women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2015-16 season at Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 23), falling to the Buckeyes 211-85.
“The meet didn’t go as expected,†head coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh said. “We had some highlights, but we still have a lot of work to do. We continue to learn and will take what we learned from today’s races to get better tomorrow.â€
The meet kicked off with the 400-yard medley relay, with the squad of junior Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England), freshman Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), junior Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and senior Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) finishing in fourth place with a final time of 3:55.56.
In the next race, the 1,000-yard freestyle, junior Bianca Hauzer (Bedfordview, South Africa) finished in fourth place, touching in at 10:36.03. Senior Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio) finished in sixth place and sophomore Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) finished in seventh place, finishing with times of 10:52.78 and 10:56.26, respectively.
In the 200-yard freestyle, junior Josie Barker (Richmond, N.Yorkshire Eng.) finished in fifth place with a time of 1:53.97, and in the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.) touched in at 59.63 and a fifth-place finish.
In the fifth event of the evening, Hornstra finished the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.03 and in the 200-yard butterfly, Dawson touched in with a final time of 2:05.16 and a fifth-place finish.
In the 50-yard freestyle, freshman Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) sprinted to her first career victory, finishing the race at 23.56. Van Lanen would also hit the podium in the 100-yard freestyle, finished the race at 51.68 and a third-place finish.
In the 10th event of the evening, Dawson finished the 200-yard backstroke in third place with a final time of 2:03.99.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hornstra took second place, finished with a time of 2:25.10, followed by teammate Gyurke, who finished in 2:31.25 and a third-place finish. Senior Ariel Hodges (Warren, Mich.) placed fourth in the race, finished with a final time of 2:36.63.
The next event was the 500-yard freestyle, where sophomore Katie Lemen (Carmel, Ind.) finished in third place (5:17.75) and freshman Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) fished right behind her in fourth place (5:18.40).
In the 100-yard butterfly, Dukes placed second with a final time of 56.89, Patz finished in third place (59.12) and freshman Maddie Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) finished in fourth place with a final time of 1:00.38
In the 200-yard IM, Dawson finished in second place (2:08.34), Gyurke in third place at 2:11.58 and junior Kelse Johnson (Centennial, Colo.) placed fourth (2:14.34). In the final even of the evening, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Bobcat squad of Van Lanen, sophomore Liz Murphy (Western Springs, Ill.), Barker and Clark finished in second place with a final time of 1:37.29.
In diving, senior Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) finished the 3-meter event in third place with a final score of 282.23, while sophomore Karrisa Conner (Granite Bay, Calif.) finished in fifth place with a final score of 180.98. In the 1 â€"meter event, Bartlett finished in third place (285.00) and Conner placed fifth, with a final score of 186.90.
The Bobcats jump right back into the pool on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they head to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m.
