ATHENS, Ohio - Louzeth Schutte's first-half goal provided the difference this afternoon as Ohio topped Richmond, 1-0. The senior ripped a shot from the top of the shooting circle past the Spider goalkeeper in the 28th minute as the Bobcats improved to 2-0.
"We are very happy with the result and we did a really nice job with our passing throughout the game," Schutte said. "It's always fun to plays these types of games. Richmond is a very competitive team and we knew there were going to be a lot of 50/50 balls out there today."
In the closing minutes of the first half, Ohio was awarded its first penalty corner. Sophomore Jessica Jue flicked it in play to junior Laura Mastro, who then left it off for Schutte. The senior from South Africa rocketed home her first goal of the season that turned out to be the eventual game-winner.
The defense was solid once again as Jen McGill registered her second-consecutive shutout. The senior made three saves as Richmond outshot the `Cats, 9-7, and held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
"Our defense has been phenomenal these first two games," McGill said. "Everyone is talking and making sure the other is in the right position. They've really done a nice job of blocking things up for the other team. Lo, Jenna and Lauryl have done a fantastic job of keeping things organized."
Ohio picked things up in the second half, tallying six shots to Richmond's five. Jue, Brooke Edwards and Kristine Geges were all denied by UR goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski, while Schutte added two more tries on goal and Taylor Brown had a chance.
"We really played well in the second half. It was a hard fight because Richmond took away some of the things we tried to do, but we stuck to our game plan and got a positive result," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said.
The Bobcats play at No. 6 Ohio State this Wednesday at 3 p.m.
