ATHENS, Ohio-Designated player Lauren Gellerman rapped a three-run double and hurler Emily Wethington went the distance on the mound as the Ohio softball team held off a late charge by Western Illinois to emerge victorious by a score of 4-3 Monday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field.

Ohio improved to 5-5 with the win, while WIU dropped to 2-8.

Wethington (3-2) tied the school's career record for strikeouts on the day, whiffing seven batters, while allowing three runs on four hits with four walks.

WIU starter Ashley Campbell (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with no strikeouts and two walks.

Gellerman also had a single to go with the big double and center fielder Paige Kemezis added two hits as well.

WIU first baseman Jamie Goss drove in a pair of runs for the Leathernecks.

The Bobcats got three of their runs in the first inning when Gellerman's shot cleared the bases. Leading up to that, shortstop Alexis Joseph had reached on a walk and Kemezis followed with a single down the right field line. Wethington then reached on a fielder's choice to set the stage for Gellerman.

Ohio tacked on a fourth run in the second when Kemezis launched a sacrifice fly to right, scoring second baseman Brooke Morgart.

WIU got two in the sixth and put one across in the seventh before Wethington got catcher Nikki Marinec to pop out to first in foul territory to clinch the victory.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday against Marshall for a 1 p.m. doubleheader back at the Ohio Softball Field.
