GREENVILLE, S.C.-The Ohio baseball team dropped a pair of games to Furman Saturday at Latham Field as the two teams continued their four-game series.
The Paladins (3-0) picked up a 12-5 win in the first game and a 10-3 triumph in the second.
Furman racked up 19 hits in the first game as Ohio (0-3) sent seven pitchers to the mound. Eight Paladin starters all posted at least one hit, while second baseman Will Muzika, right fielder Will Miller and catcher Paul Nitto all had three hits. Center fielder Rob Fondu also added a two-run homer. Ohio got two hits apiece from left fielder Jensen Painter, catcher Trace Voshell (both homers) and first baseman Taylor Emody. Voshell's bombs provided four of the Bobcats' five RBIs and Painter provided the other.
Furman reliever Stephen Gary (1-0) was credited with the win, throwing just one inning and allowing one run on two hits. Ohio reliever Marck Paliotto (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up one earned run on two hits.
Paladin left fielder Will Owens had three hits and scored three runs in the second game, while designated hitter Taylor Johnson drove in three runs (including a two-run homer). Ohio got three hits from second baseman Bryan Barnes.
Furman starter Matt Plate (1-0) got the victory, tossing five and one-third innings, yielding two runs on just two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Bobcat starter Brent Choban (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work.
In the first game, Voshell put Ohio on top 2-0 in the second inning with a two-run blast to left field before Furman came back with two runs each in the third and fourth frames.
Voshell evened the affair with another two-run shot to left in the sixth, but the Paladins took a big lead with five tallies in the bottom half of the inning.
Painter knocked in third baseman Dan Ward with a double to center in the seventh, but Furman added three more in the eighth for the final margin.
Barnes gave Ohio a 1-0 lead in the second game on a homer to right, but Furman scored the next six runs with three in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth.
Ohio catcher J.R. Reynolds scored right fielder Adam Gecewich with an RBI groundout to third in the fifth inning, before the Paladins tacked on four more with two in the bottom half of the frame and one each in the sixth and seventh.
Bobcat pinch hitter Doug Holmes knocked in the game's last run with a single to center, plating center fielder Ethan Newton.
The two teams will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
