HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - With the second half of the season already underway, the Ohio swimming and diving team grasped win number five Tuesday night with a 132-87 win over Marshall. Ohio (5-2, 2-1 MAC) secured the top spot in all but three events as a plethora of Bobcats contributed in the victory.
Living up to their reputation as one of the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) elite, the first segment of the Bobcat relay squad started the action for Ohio in the 200 Medley Relay as Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.), Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio), Caroline Meyer (Holland, Mich.), and Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio) took first place with a time of 1:49.94. Following closely behind in second was the Katie Power (Ottawa, Ontario), Morgan Sprosty (Irvine, Calif.), Molly Slattery (Fredericksburg, Va.), and Kristen Witham (Fort Wayne, Ind.) combination finished with a time of 1:50.21.
Stacey Huber (Gainesville, Fla.) continued her senior leadership in the 1000 Free with a first-place time of 10:12.16, while Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) took second with a 10:25.45.
Abby Corcoran (Tuscon, Ariz.) and Megen Gegesky (Grosse Ile, Mich.) offered another one-two punch in the 200 Free as they finished first and second with times of 1:58.91 and 2:00.57, respectively. Funk followed up next in the 50 Free with a first-place time of 24.40, while Power finished fifth with a time of 26.57.
A talented trio of Bobcats finished atop the rankings in the 200 IM as Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.), Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.), and Witham took first, second, and third place with times of 2:10.69, 2:10.77, and 2:13.22, respectively.
In her first action of the season, Slattery delivered a second-place finish in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.01, while fellow underclassmen Sprosty and Kristyn Repke (Cary, N.C.) took third and fifth with times of 59.26 and 1:01.04, respectively. The 100 Free showed more of the same for Ohio, as Cecere and Brooks continued their solid evenings with first and second place times of 53.49 and 53.65, respectively.
Heim added to her list of career first-place finishes in the 100 Back with a time of 59.88, while Power took third in the event with a time of 1:01.81. Four `Cats swept the 500 Free as Williams, Huber, Stearns, and Gegesky took the top four spots with times of 5:03.60, 5:09.34, 5:09.38, and 5:18.26, respectively.
Rounding out the list for Ohio were Lindsay Hamilton (White City, Saskatchewan) and Kristin Capcik (Milwaukee, Wisc.) as both divers went on to set both season and personal-best scores on the 1-meter boards. Hamilton recorded two first-place finishes with a score of 311.25 on the 3-meter and both a season and personal best score of 306.38 on the 1-meter, breaking her old career record of 299.10. Capcik took third in the 3-meter boards with a score of 225.30 and second in the 1-meter with a 235.35, surpassing her old personal-best score of 223.57.
Ohio returns home for another dual meet this weekend against MAC opponent Akron. Action is set to begin this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
