Ohio Takes Down Cleveland State, 2-1

AVON, Ohio-The Ohio baseball team used five pitchers and got another impressive midweek performance on the mound to defeat Cleveland State 2-1 at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.

 

Ohio improved to 12-26 overall, while Cleveland State dropped to 9-29.

 

Bobcat hurlers Brock Trimbur, Ben Trimbur, Andrew Danko, Michael Dillon and Rex Ingham combined to limit the Vikings to just seven hits, including only two extra-base hits. Brock Trimbur (1-2) got the win, tossing the first three innings of the contest, where he allowed just one run on four hits with one strikeout and no walks. Ingham got his first save of the season, allowing one hit over the game’s final two innings.

 

CSU’s Nate Blankemeyer (1-3) was the hard-luck loser, recording 26 of the 27 outs in the contest. He yielded two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

 

Ohio first baseman Jerod Yakubik extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a 2-for-5 effort with a run scored. Third baseman Bryan Barnes and designated hitter Seth Streich both went 2-for-4.

 

Viking second baseman Tom Carter picked up two hits to lead the home team.

 

CSU put up the first run of the contest with a tally in the bottom of the first, but Ohio got both of its runs on a pair of tallies in the third. Ohio center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire knocked in shortstop Wesley O’Neill with a sacrifice fly to right in the third. O’Neill led off the inning by reaching on an error and eventually stole third for his second swipe of the season. Yakubik, who singled to right after O’Neill’s at-bat, came home when Barnes singled up the middle.

 

In the bottom of the ninth, CSU’s Carter reached with a one-out single through the right side, but Ingham got designated hitter Alex Gnezda to ground into a game-ending double play to end the threat.

 

The Vikings were plagued by errors in the game, with Carter committing three of the squad’s six on the evening.

                                                                                                            

Ohio will be back in action Wednesday as it travels to Duquesne for a 3 p.m. start.
