Eagles Down Bobcats in Series Finale, 3-2

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Ohio Bobcats, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

After scoring the first run of the game in the third inning, the Eagles (12-23, 4-6 MAC) held a 1-0 lead until the Bobcats (18-19, 5-9 MAC) made a run for the victory and scored twice in the top of the seventh.

With bases loaded, senior Maureen McKelvey (Stow, Ohio) hit a two-RBI single to right field and scored freshman Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.) and sophomore Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) for a 2-1 Bobcat lead.

Eastern Michigan didn't give in to the pressure as lead-off hitter Jenny Scherer hit a home run and senior Jessica Grant hit an RBI-double in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.

The Bobcats had 12 hits and one error in the game. Senior Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) had a team-high three hits, while Petrich and sophomore Deanna Hartsough (Santa Ana, Calif.) had two hits each. Waters was 3-for-4 in the game, Petrich was 2-for-4 with one run, and Hartsough finished 2-for-3.

The Eagles finished with 11 hits and zero errors. Scherer led the team with three hits on the day. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) took the loss in the circle for the Bobcats. She pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. Freshman Kari Chambers took the victory for the Eagles. She pitched only 0.2 innings as the relief pitcher and gets the win because she was the pitcher on record when her team gained the lead and stayed ahead.

Ohio will hit the field again on Wednesday to host NCAA Division II foe Ohio Valley in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
