CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Ohio softball team opened the Cavalier Classic with a 5-2 win over Georgetown and a 2-1 loss to Radford Friday afternoon at the University of Virginia.
Ohio (7-8) will face Rutgers tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and tourney-host Virginia at 3 p.m.
Freshman Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.) led all players on the day with a .600 batting average. Wethington went 3-for-5, including two hits against Georgetown. Wethington also got her fourth win in the pitching circle in game one. She struck out eight batters in seven innings of action and walked only one.
"Overall, it was a good day" said Wethington. "I put the ball through a couple of times and that was a good thing. Offensively, we made plays when we needed too. We started off kind of slow, but picked it up in the end. Our defense was very strong. The outfield really saved us."
Senior Amanda Sacks (Chugiak, Alaska) was 2-for-4 (.500) on the day with two runs and an RBI. Sacks scored a run in each game, including Ohio's only run against Radford in game two. Sophomore Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) also scored two runs, both against Georgetown in game one. She also had a double.
With the score knotted at 2-2 in game one, the Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the victory. Senior Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) singled and Petrich followed with a double to advance Waters to third, who then stole home on a fly ball. Petrich then scored on an RBI single by Sacks, who then scored on an RBI single by senior Kristen Salvatore (Kirtland, Ohio).
"We got some very good defensive play today," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "Shalene (Petrich) had some great throws to the plate and it was exciting to see Jordan (Paden) punch out a couple would-be runs. Offensively, we made some good adjustments. We're definitely looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
