ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio field hockey team will play its third game in four days this week, taking a short trip up the road to face Maryland Tuesday at Ohio State's North Turf Field in Columbus.
The Bobcats (1-1) are fresh off splitting a pair of games in a season-opening swing to the East Coast.
In the opener, Northeastern pulled out to an early lead, but twice Ohio cut the deficit to one. A late second half offensive run for the Huskies allowed the home team to escape with a 7-2 victory. In her first collegiate game, Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) scored both Ohio goals, the first an early tally on a pass from Lindsay Rothenberger (Fleetwood, Pa.) and the second a second-half score on a pass from her sister Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa).
In the second half of the road trip, the Bobcats spoiled the opening of the newly built Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, topping Providence 2-1. Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) took a pass from Chelsea Mearig (Lititz, Pa.) and scored to give Ohio a first half lead, then Albini recorded the assist on a E. Coetzee goal in the second. After pulling to within one, Providence couldn't capitalize on back-to-back penalty corners as time expired. The win marked the first in the head coaching career of Ohio boss Neil Macmillan.
Tuesday's opponent, Maryland, will also play three games in four days to start the season. The Terrapins knocked off Northwestern, 5-2, on Saturday in Evanston, Ill. They will face Ohio State today, then meet the Bobcats on a neutral field on Tuesday.
Five different players scored for Maryland in its season-opening victory. The Terps won the battle of penalty corners 15-1 and registered 25 shots on goal.
Maryland lost to eventual-champion and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Wake Forest in the Final Four of last fall's NCAA Tournament. The squad returns eight starters, including three All-Americans in 2005.
The `Cats and Terps are set to tangle at noon Tuesday at Ohio State's North Turf Field. Ohio will open the home portion of the schedule Sept. 9 at Peggy Pruitt Field.
