Richard "Rick" Dowswell was the sixth National Champion in Ohio University history in 1972 by winning the NCAA Javelin Championship with a throw of 265’11” in Eugene, Oregon. In 1973 he finished fourth in the NCAA and thus becoming a two-time All-American. In the MAC he won the javelin throw all four years (1971, 1972, 1973, 1974). He was a member of the Canadian Olympic Team in 1972. In the World University Games, he placed 9th overall.
