Murphy was named All-District Four in 1968 and two-time All-Mid-American Conference in 1968 and 1969. Was All-American first baseman in 1968 where he led the MAC in hitting with a batting average of .500. His career batting average is .298 with 91 hits in 305 trips, including 20 doubles, 6 triples, 7 home runs, 144 total bases and 68 RBIs. His fielding average was .981. Ohio's won-loss record in his career was 60-27. His coach, Bob Wren, called him "one of the best captains we ever had." He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1969.
