Matt Engleka was a four-year letterwinner, playing for the baseball team from 1992-95. Playing at the shortstop position, he earned several conference and regional honors including Honorable Mention All-MAC (1993), First Team All-MAC (1994-95) and First Team All-Mid East Regional (1995). Engleka was also named to the Academic All-MAC First Team in 1994-95.Â
Engleka served as a team captain in 1995 and received several team awards during his time at Ohio. He was named the 1993 recipient of the Bob Adams Award, which is given to the most outstanding Ohio University baseball sophomore. Later, Engleka was selected as the 1994-95 Ohio Baseball Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.Â
Engleka still ranks fourth in program history in assists in a single season, recording 180 during the 1995 season. He also ranks seventh in career base on balls (101) and is tied second for single season base on balls (46, 1995).Â
In the 46th round of the 1995 MLB Draft, Engleka was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. He played for the Jamestown Jammers in 1995, the short season single-affiliate of the Tigers. In 1996, Engleka played for the Fayetteville Generals, the single-A affiliate of the Tigers.Â
