Elden Armbrust was a three-time letter winner in both football and track. He was the high scorer in the 1935 Buckeye Conference Track Championships. He was also a consistent scorer in the 100 and 200-yard dashes, the pole vault, and the low hurdles and broad jump. The Athena of 1936 called him "half-brother to the wind". He was also described as a speed merchant in football whose specialty was skirting ends for long gains. Armbrust was a member of the 1932 team that defeated the Navy 14-0. He scored four touchdowns in a 53-0 shutout of Rio Grande. The scores came on an 85-yard kickoff return, a 46-yard punt return, a 61-yard run from the scrimmage, and a 2-yard run followed by 3 extra points from a hefty drop-kick.
