Dick Smail golfed for Ohio University. He tied for the Mid-American Conference gold medalist honors twice. In 1954, Smail and Kent State’s Danny Forlani tied with 146s. In 1955, Smail and teammate Dave Moore, tied for MAC medalist honors with 145s. Smail’s career average of 75.12 ranks very high. In 1953, he was tied for second on his team with a 76.4 average. He was second in 1954 with a 74.4 average and second again in 1955 with 74.87. He was second in the Ohio Intercollegiate Championships in 1953 with a 154. Ohio teams won or tied for the MAC title in each of Smail’s three seasons. He lettered four years. He helped raise $30,000 for Muscular Dystrophy and the American Heart Association by directing golf tournaments. He shot a record 59 on a Cleveland Course, carding one eagle and nine birdies. He won the 1962 Cleveland District Gold Association Title and the 1953 Ohio State Junior Championship.
