CLEVELAND – Junior middle blocker Tia Jimerson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and junior setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) took home weekly Mid-American Conference awards for their performance last weekend, the league announced Monday (Nov. 18). Jimerson was named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week while Giacomazzi was named MAC East Setter of the Week.
Jimerson and Giacomazzi have now won those respective in back-to-back weeks. Jimerson has now won the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week award three times this season, while Giacomazzi has wo the MAC East Setter of the Week award three times as well. Sophomore libero Emma Tupa (Brecksville, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Dahlias Bouyer (Brownstown, Mich.) have also taken home MAC East Defensive Player of the Week awards this season.
Ohio earned its third-straight sweep last Friday over Buffalo and then took down Akron on Saturday for its fourth-straight win. Jimerson racked up 10 blocks over the weekend (two solo, eight assisted) and had seven (two solo, five assisted) in Ohio's four-set win over the Zips on Senior night. Also against Akron, Jimerson piled up 11 kills and hit .250. Over the weekend, Jimerson tallied 15 hammers on 46 swings.
Giacomazzi helped Ohio rack up 98 kills and hit .251 as Ohio picked up its third-straight sweep and its fourth-straight win. Against Akron, Giacomazzi had earned 17th double-double of the season with 49 assists and 12 digs. Ohio was red-hot, hitting .337 while racking up 54 kills in the win. Giacomazzi had 35 helpers in Ohio's sweep of UB to begin the weekend. In total, Giacomazzi had 15 digs, five blocks and three kills over the weekend.
Ohio earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming MAC Volleyball Tournament and will face off with No. 8 Kent State on Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 p.m. All matches of the tournament will be streamed live on ESPN+, and voice of Ohio Volleyball Jake Hromada will call every match live on OhioBobcats.com.
