FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team came from behind to take down Wright State, 3-2, (25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14) on Friday evening inside McLin Gymnasium in an exhibition match. Three players – Lizzie Stephens, Vera Giacomazzi and Dahlias Bouyer – recorded double-doubles in the victory.
"I am thankful our level of play increased throughout the match," head coach Deane Webb said. "There are many parts of the game that we need to improve before we play again. Our middles performed well offensively today."
The Bobcats were led on offensive by senior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas), who had 15 kills. Four total Bobcats had double figure kill totals, with junior opposite Maggie Nedoma (Brook Park, Ohio) totaling 13, redshirt sophomore middle blocker/opposite Dahlias Bouyer (Brownstown, Mich.) had 11 kills and graduate transfer middle blocker Shayla Phillip posted 10 terminations.
"Maggie passed well and struggled attacking," Webb said. "In some ways it was good for our team to play through her struggle, as she has been so dominant offensively lately that others didn't need to contribute at the level that was required in this match."
Ohio posted 62 team kills and had four more terminations than Wright State. Freshman outside hitter Olivia Margolies (Galena, Ohio) had seven kills.
"Olivia has grown throughout our team trip to Europe, performed well in Green and White scrimmage, and again performed well when her number was called tonight," Webb added.
Bouyer led the team in attacking percentage with .588 after posting 11 kills on 17 swings with just one error. Phillip had a .316 attacking clip while the team hit .198. The Bobcats held Wright State to a .162 hitting percentage. In the first set, Ohio committed just three errors and had a .361 attacking clip with 16 kills.
Junior setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) dished out 50 assists and recorded a double-double after recording 16 digs. Giacomazzi completed her day with three kills on eight swings.
Ohio had 84 team digs and produced five players with double-digit dig totals. Junior libero Macy Reihing (Lexington, Ky.) led the way with 26 digs. Senior libero Meredith Howe (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had 15 digs while Stephens and Nedoma each had 11. Stephens and Nedoma each had a double-double. Reihing also had four assists.
The Bobcats had seven team blocks. Nedoma paced OU with four blocks, including one solo stuff. Phillip and Bouyer had three while Stephens had two.
The Bobcats will begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. against Fresno State in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
