COLUMBIA, Mo-- The Ohio volleyball team (4-7) fell to the Drake Bulldogs (10-1), 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8), today in its opening match of the Mizzou Invitational at the Hearnes Center.
The Bobcats came roaring out of the locker room starting off the first set with a 15-5 lead. Eleven of the Bobcat points scored on kills and two points scored on service aces from redshirt senior outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio). The Bobcats continued to push, finishing the first set with a 25-14 win on two kills by senior right-side hitter Stephanie Olman (Maumee, Ohio). The Bobcats finished the set with a .464 hitting percentage on 14 kills in 28 total attempts with only one registered hitting error.
Ohio fell short to the Bulldogs in a close second set, 25-23 hitting zero as a team with 10 kills and 10 errors.
The Bobcats and Bulldogs both with a set victory entered into set three of the Mizzou Invitational with Ohio producing an early 6-2 lead over the Bulldogs. With Ohio and Drake tied at 10, the Bulldogs outscored the Bobcats 9-2 to take a 19-12 lead late in the third set. Junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Allyson Vaughn (Glenview, Ill.) entered the match and registered three kills on three attempts in an attempt to close the gap After fighting back, set three resulted in a 25-20 loss for the Bobcats.
With the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 in sets wins, the Bobcats outscored the Bulldogs 17-7 to finish set four resulting, in a 25-18 win. Junior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas) and redshirt junior middle blocker Simone Miller (Kalamazoo, Mich.) both registered three kills and redshirt senior right-side hitter Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) registered two kills in the 17-point charge by the Bobcats. Ohio recorded a .306 hitting percentage and a .361 kill percentage alongside four block assists contributing to the fourth set win.
Entering into the fifth set, the Bobcats dug themselves into an early 8-3 deficit with two general errors and four hitting errors. With the momentum on the Bulldogs' side, Ohio falls to Drake in the fifth set 15-8. Unforced hitting errors again hampered Ohio in the fifth set as the Bobcats recorded six hitting errors to Drake's two.
"The two sets we win, we have one error and two errors. And the sets that we lose, we had six or more -- including a set to fifteen, we had six errors," said fifth-year head coach Deane Webb. "Hitting errors, I'm not talking serving. It is pretty simple, if we cut down the unforced errors we are going to be a really good team."
Nelso led Ohio with 11 kills and added six assisted blocks. Miller set a career high with 10 total blocks (one solo, nine assisted) to lead the match. Olman chipped in 10 kills. Freshman setter Kyra Slavik (Saint Charles, Ill.) registered 23 assists to lead the Bobcats. Sophomore setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) achieved a double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs. Stephens and Kosiorek both just missed out on double-doubles, with Stephens finishing with nine kills and 14 digs and Kosiorek adding nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Macy Reihing (Lexington, Kentucky) recorded a team-high 16 digs.
Senior outside hitter Grace Schofield led the Bulldogs in kills with 16 hitting followed by sophomore right side hitter Emily Plock with 12 kills. Junior setter Paige Aspinwall led the match with 25 assists for the Bulldogs followed by freshman setter Caitlyn Smith who tallied 18. Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Kylee Macke compiled a team-high 19 digs.
Up next, a quick turnaround for Ohio as they return to the Heames Center this evening for its second match of the 2018 Mizzou Invitational against host, Missouri at 8 pm EST.
