MUNCIE, Ind. -- Senior Gaza Odunaiya (Athens, Ohio) and junior Tajah Haley (Washington, Pa.) turned in a pair of second-place finishes to help put the Ohio track & field team in fourth with 17 points after the first day of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Central Michigan and Akron are tied for first with 29 points while Bowling Green ranks third with 26 points.
Odunaiya claimed second in the hammer thanks to a school-record toss of 60.22 meters, scoring eight points for the Bobcats.
Haley had an eventful day for Ohio. She earned eight points for Ohio in the javelin with a career-best throw of 47.34 meters to take second place. Haley is also competing for the Bobcats in the heptathlon and is in fifth place through four events with 2,917 points. She took ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.35, sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.57 meters, second in the shot put with a toss of 12.65 meters and 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.95 meters -- achieving personal bests in all four events.
On the track, one event final and three event prelims were held. In the 10000-meter run final, sophomore Hailey Bowes (Arlington Heights, Ill.) picked up a point for Ohio by placing eighth in 36:55.35.
The 1500-meter run prelims saw redshirt junior Melissa Koziol (Burton, Ohio) and redshirt junior Madison Sury (Waterford, Ohio) qualify for the finals. Koziol took 11th with a time of 4:44.94 while Sury placed 12th by crossing the line in 4:46.03.
Redshirt junior Ashleigh Carr (Oakland, Neb.) qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles by placing second in the prelims with a time of 1:00.46.
Day two of the 2019 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET on Friday (May 10).
