Columbus, Ohio – Ohio track and field returns home from the 2018 Ohio State Buckeye Tune-Up (Feb. 16) where the Bobcats saw several top-10 finishes as well as a new program record in the weight throw from junior Gaza Odunaiya.
The running events were kicked off by the 60m dash where junior Thelma Agyekum (Delaware, Ohio) ran a 7.99 to place 12th overall. Senior Courtney Guiley (Louisville, Ohio) came in next with a time of 8.10 just ahead of freshman Olivia Brewer (Mount Gilead, Ohio) at 8.14 and junior Callyn Voase (Mentor, Ohio) at 8.20.
In the 200m dash, freshman Abby Summers (Powell, Ohio), Agyekum, and Brewer all placed in the top-10 with times of 26.51, 26.88, and 27.51, respectively.
Ohio sophomore Marissa Handel (Highland Heights, Ohio) placed in the top-five of the 400m dash with a time of 58.13 securing fourth place. Junior Emily Deering (Geneva, Ohio) and sophomore Tajah Haley (Washington, Pa.) came in next for the 'Cats with a time of 59.31 to place eighth and a time of 1:04.11 to place 14th.
In the mile, Ohio had three top-10 finishes including sophomore Melissa Koziol (Burton, Ohio) in third with a 5:11.32 time, junior Josie Woosley (Pataskala, Ohio) in fourth with a 5:11.35 time, and senior Tara Tollett (Shadyside, Ohio) in eighth with a 5:20.19 time.
Next was the 3K where junior Alyssa Atkinson (Granville, Ohio) ran a time of 9:58.25 to place sixth. Senior Christina Seas (West Union, Ohio), sophomore Tiffany Hill (Dublin, Ohio), and freshman Hailey Bowes (Arlington Heights, Ill.) all placed in the top-20 with times of 10:12.61, 10:17.96, and 10:24.22, respectively.
In the 60m hurdles, senior Mya Hodge (Dublin, Ohio) qualified for the finals with a preliminary time of 9.03 to place fifth. She went on to compete in the final round where she ran a 9.23 to place seventh.
The field events were started with the high jump where Ohio sophomore Tana Barrett (Newark, Ohio) tied for fourth place with a jump of 1.58m. Sophomore Atiya Spaulding (Chesapeake, Ohio) and Haley both recorded jumps of 1.48m.
In the long jump, sophomore Keilah Causey (Gahanna, Ohio) recorded a jump of 4.68m to place ninth. She then went on to record a lifetime-best and automatically qualify for the MAC tournament in the triple jump with a jump of 11.71m. This jump is also currently 10th-best in the conference and the third best in Ohio history.
In the weight throw, junior Gaza Odunaiya (Athens, Ohio) set a new school record with a throw of 19.07m beating the record by over a foot.
Ohio track and field will next compete and the 2018 Indoor Track & Field Mid-American Conference Championships (Feb 23-24) hosted by the Bowling Green Falcons and then look to begin the 2018 outdoor season.
