ATHENS, Ohio - Senior Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), senior Katherine Redden (Fort Thomas, Ky.), and junior Katherine Garrity (Eagan, Minn.) were named captains of the 2019-20 Ohio swimming and diving team, second-year head coach Mason Norman announced today (Sept. 17).
"Over the summer and into the start of this season we had many leaders emerge to move our team toward its goals", said Norman. "I look forward to working alongside Kat [Redden], Emilia, and Katie [Garrity] as they lead their teammates this season. I believe each will do a great job in this role."
Lahtinen, a captain on last year's team, is a two-time Ohio scholar-athlete of the week and was named to both the Academic All-MAC and Second Team All-MAC rosters. She holds the record for the second-fastest time in program history for the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, and the ninth-fastest time in program history for the 200 IM.
Redden, a first-time captain, swam well at the MAC Championships last year, posting a season-best 5:13.38 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 17:24.76 in the 1650-yard freestyle.
Garrity, a first-time captain, holds the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 400 IM and the eighth-fastest time in the 1650-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:20.62 and 16:46.22, respectively. She was also named to the Academic All-MAC team.
The Ohio swimming and diving team kick-starts their season on Homecoming weekend with the annual Green and White Meet at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 11 at the Ohio University Aquatics Center.
