ATHENS, Ohio – First year head coach Mason Norman announces captains of the Ohio Women's Swimming and Diving team for the 2018-19 season.
After an intra-squad exhibition meet and dual meets against Miami and Marshall, Norman has announced senior Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.), senior Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.), senior Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) and junior Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland) as the four captains of Ohio University Swimming and Diving for the 2018-19 season.
The 2018-19 season begins a new era, the "Norman Era", for Ohio Swimming and Diving. With the hire of first year head coach Mason Norman, who added first year head diving coach Britni Fisher and first year assistant coach Carlye Ellis to his staff, Ohio Swimming and Diving had an entirely different look as training began. Norman and his staff waited until all felt a true understanding of what individuals earned the captain title and resembled true leadership for this swim and dive squad before a decision was made.
Davis thus far this 2018-19 season has competed in both dual meets with three second place finishes, one in the 200-yard butterfly and the other two as a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay teams. Davis also has a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and two fifth-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly event. In the 2017-18 season, at the MAC Championships, Davis recorded season-best times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.39), the 100-yrad butterfly (57.71), the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.00), the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.20), and in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:27.71). She recorded a season-best time of 57.71 in the 50-yard butterfly at the TYR Invitational and was named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
Henderson thus far this 2018-19 season has competed in both dual meets with a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle as well as a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Henderson has also recorded a third-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle and two fourth place finishes, one as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team and the other in the 500-yard freestyle event. In the 2017-18 season, at the MAC Championships, Henderson recorded season-bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.40), the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.07), the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:59.23), and in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:27.71). She recorded a season-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay against Buffalo clocking in at 10:24.79 and 1:40.23, respectively and was named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
Hughes thus far this 2018-19 season has competed in both dual meets with two first place finishes in the 1-meter dive event and two third place finishes in the 3-meter dive event. In the 2017-18 season, Hughes recorded a season-best in the 1-meter dive at the Buffalo Diving Invite with a final score of 257.60 to place third overall as well as recorded a season-best in the 3-meter dive against Bowling Green with a total score of 250.13 to place third.
Lahtinen thus far this 2018-19 season has competed in both dual meets with two first-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke as well as two second place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lahtinen has also been a member of the 400-yard medley relay team and the 200-yard medley relay team that both registered second-place finishes. Lahtinen has a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard IM event. In the 2017-18 season, she recorded a season-best against Youngstown State where she recorded a time of 1:07.18 in the 100-yard backstroke and a time of 3:49.46 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. At the MAC Championships, she posted season-best times in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.98), 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.37), 200-yard IM (2:08.41), 200-yard medley relay (1:41.57), and 400-yard medley relay (3:45.69). She recorded a season-best time in the 100-yard IM at the TYR Invitational clocking in a time of 59.53 and was named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
With new leadership established, the Bobcats will hit the road to Ypsilanti, Michigan to battle the Eagles of Eastern Michigan for its second Mid-American Conference dual meet of the 2018-19 season on Saturday Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. EST.
