CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team looks to kick off the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday (March 15). The first session is set to begin at 12 p.m. with session two beginning at 7 p.m.
Ohio junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) was the only Bobcat to be selected for this year's tournament, being placed in a pigtail match in the first session of the day against North Dakota State's Cam Sykora (22-10) in the 133-class. The winner of that match will go on to face Lehigh's No. 6 seeded Scott Parker (18-3) in the second round of the tournament.
Kelly has recorded a 25-6 record on the season, earning his second trip to the NCAA Championships in his time as a Bobcat. In the 2015-16 season, Kelly posted a 23-9 record and qualified for the Championships as the No. 13 seed in the 133-pound weight class.
Kelly's first test will come in a pigtail match against North Dakota State's Cam Sykora (22-10). Sykora currently leads the NCAA with 12 tech falls in a time of 47:59 on the season. The redshirt sophomore is from Wheaton, Minn. and has recorded 22 wins in the 2017-18 season.
Lehigh's Scott Parker currently holds an 18-3 record on the season and earned a 6th seed in the 133-class. The winner of the pigtail match will take on Parker in the first round of the championships. Parker earned All-America honors last season and finished eighth place in the 133-class. This marks as Parker's third NCAA tournament appearance while he holds an 8-2 record against NCAA qualifiers.
Overall, 283 wrestlers qualified automatically through individual Conference Championships as the season has been winding down. After the final brackets were announced, 330 wrestlers in total were selected to compete. Wrestlers will compete in the following 10 weight classes: 125 pounds, 133 pounds, 141 pounds, 149 pounds, 157 pounds, 165 pounds, 174 pounds, 184 pounds, 197 pounds, Heavyweights (183-285 pounds). The same 10 classes will be used in conference and regional qualifying meets.
