Athens, Ohio— The Ohio women's golf team returns to the green to continue its spring season Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 25 when it competes in the 2018 Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at Rio Verde Country Club on the 6,128-yard Quail Run Golf Course in Rio Verde, Ariz.
This is the first time the tournament will be held at the Quail Run course since 2014, when Xavier claimed victory.
This year's event will see 17 teams competing including Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling, Green, Bradley, Central Michigan, Illinois State, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Seton Hall, Arkansas Little-Rock, UMKC, Western Michigan, Wichita State, and Xavier.
Last year, at the 2017 Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, Eastern Michigan was team champion finishing with a total score of 889. Danielle Nicholson (Akron) was the individual medalist with a final score of 215. Past winners also include Toledo, Seton Hall, and Northern Arizona.
Competing this week are junior Nicole Smiley (Dublin, Ohio), sophomore Marissa Balish (Allison Park, Pa), freshman Ashley Flynn (Dublin, Ohio), junior Hannah Travis (Lancaster, Ohio), junior Emily Hughes (Columbus, Ohio), and senior Lily Pendy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.)
Practice rounds will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb 22. Round one will begin on Friday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. Round two will take place Saturday Feb. 24 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and the third and final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Last season, Ohio finished tied for 16-place with a total score of 928 (+64).
The Bobcats are coming off a sixth-place finish at the 2018 Mid-American Match Play Challenge hosted by Bowling Green Feb.5-6. The Bobcats went 2-2 during the weekend, defeating Dayton and UNC Ashville.

After the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, the Bobcats will head to Dade City, Fla. to compete in the 2018 Spring Break Shootout hosted by Western Kentucky at Lake Jovita Golf Club March 12-13.
