LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Ohio women's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of 2018 on Tuesday, Feb. 6 where the Bobcats finished in sixth place at the 2018 Mid-American Match Play Challenge hosted by Bowling Green at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. The seventh-seeded Bobcats squad opened the day by defeating eighth-seeded UNC Ashville 2-1-2. Ohio wrapped up the competition by falling to No. 4 Akron, 3-1-1.
Freshman Ashley Flynn (Dublin, Ohio) opened the matchup with UNC Ashville by defeating Adelyn Deery, 3&2. The next pairing saw sophomore Marissa Balish (Allison Park, Pa.) fall to Becca Black, 1UP, followed by junior Emily Hushes (Columbus, Ohio) who finished her matchup all squared with Janie Thomas.
Senior Lily Pendy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) concluded her first matchup of the day all squared against Taylor Hinson, and junior Nicole Smiley (Dublin, Ohio) wrapped up competition against UNC Ashville, defeating Kellen Alsip, 2&1, helping lead the Bobcats to a 2-1-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
In the afternoon, the Bobcats took on No. 4 Akron in the fifth/sixth-place matchup. Flynn opened up the matchup for Ohio, falling to Allyson Wentworth, 4&3. Next saw Balish finish all squared against Abbie Pearce, followed by Hughes falling to Pader Her, 4&3.
The second-to-last matchup of the day saw Pendy fall to Danielle Nicholson, 4&3, while Ohio concluded the day with Smiley picking up her second victory of the day, defeating Jacinta Pikunas, 2&1. Overall, the matchup saw the Bobcats fall to the Zips, 3-1-1 and finishing in sixth place.
Up next, the Bobcats will head to Rio Verde, Ariz. on Feb. 23-15 for the 2018 Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan.
