CARBONDALE, Ill. –The Ohio softball team (7-5) wrapped up play in Carbondale, Ill. on Sunday (Feb. 24), falling to Southern Illinois (10-3), 2-1.
The Bobcats would be able to get a runner on in the top of the first inning when senior Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) reached first with two outs after an SIU error. However, the Bobcats would be unable to get her home and would send the game to the bottom of the frame with the game still scoreless.
After SIU would leave a runner on in the bottom of the first, Ohio would threaten again in the top of the second. With two outs, senior Alex Day (Hilliard, Ohio) would double to center, However, she would be unable to score, keeping the game scoreless entering the bottom of the second.
After another scoreless frame from SIU in the bottom of the second, Ohio's biggest threat would come in the top of the third. With one out, sophomore Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) would single to center and then move to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Alvarez would draw another walk, putting runners on first and second. Unfortunately, the Bobcats would be unable to push a run across, keeping the game tied at 0-0.
After a scoreless bottom of the third and top of the fourth, SIU would strike first in the bottom of the fourth inning on a one-out solo homerun, putting Southern Illinois up 1-0 after four. After the Bobcats would leave a runner on in the top of the fifth inning, SIU would add on one more in the bottom of the frame off of an RBI single, putting SIU up 2-0.
After a scoreless sixth inning from both teams, Ohio would strike in the top of the seventh inning when with one out, senior Deanna Cole (Akron, Ohio) would hit her first career homerun, a solo shot to right field, cutting the SIU lead in half, Ohio would try to add on later in the frame after Yun singled with two outs. Unfortunately, the Bobcats would be unable to get the equalizer, falling to SIU, 2-1.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on five hits and did not commit an error, while SIU scored two runs on three hits and recorded one error.
Individually, Yun went 2-for-4 with two singles, while Cole added a homerun, while Day recorded a double and freshman Charlee Pond (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also recorded a base hit for the Bobcats.
In the circle, sophomore Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio), pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walked five and struck out eight batters.
Up next, the Bobcats travel to Huntington, West Virginia to play Marshall on Wednesday, February 27 at 3 p.m. The following weekend, Ohio heads to Durham, North Carolina to participate in the Duke Invitational. There, they will play Charleston Southern, Mississippi State, Campbell and Duke.
