ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's golf program has signed Felipe Darquea (Quito, Ecuador) to a National Letter of Intent to its 2019-20 recruiting class, as announced by first-year head coach Carter Cheves today.

"We are thrilled to have Felipe joining our program," said Cheves. "He is one of the top amateur players in Ecuador and will make an immediate impact next season."

Darquea is ranked eighth in the Ecuador Men's National Ranking. He finished in the top-20 at the 2018 Optimist International Junior Championship as well as the 2017 Doral Publix Junior Classi. He finished seventh in the Ecuador Open Copa Diners Club, which is a Dev Series event part of PGA Latinomaerica, firing rounds of 68, 70 and 78. Darquea shot rounds of 72, 75 and 74 in the Abierto Club Los Chillos to win the Amateur Category.

Born Sept. 13, 1999, Darquea is the son of Jaime Darquea and Maria Elena Ibarra. His cousin, Daniela Darquea, is a professional golfer. Darquea has attended Colegio Americano de Quito and Laurel Springs High School.

Darquea becomes the third member of Ohio's 2019-20 recruiting class, joining Joshua Dinouard (Vevey, Switzerland), who signed with the Bobcats in November, and Jack Towarnicky (New Bern, N.C.), who signed in December.

The Bobcats are coming off of a 2018 fall season in which they earned a pair of top-three finishes, including a second-place finish at the Phoenix Intercollegiate, which was held Oct. 15-16 at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C., in which Ohio posted a combined team score of 848 (-4) -- the second-best three-round total in program history. Sophomore Zach Crawford (Vandalia, Ohio) earned his first collegiate victory by winning the Firestone Invitational (Oct. 1-2) by three strokes at the Firestone Country Club North Course with a total score of 206 (-10), which ranks as the second-best three-round total in program history. He was named Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career for his efforts.

Ohio's 2019 spring schedule will commence Feb. 11-12 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, which will be held at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
