ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's golf team returns to the links this weekend (Feb. 17-18) in Savannah, Ga., to partake in The Invitational at Savannah Harbor.
The Bobcats will battle host William & Mary, Austin Peay, Belmont, Bethune-Cookman, Brown, Butler, Florida A&M, Fort Wayne, Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State, Northern Kentucky, Savannah State, South Carolina Beaufort, Tennessee Tech and Valparaiso in the 54-hole, two-day event at The Club at Savannah Harbor, which is a par 72, 7,287-yard course. Action will begin with an 8:15 a.m. ET shotgun start both days of the tournament.
Ohio finished seventh at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor last year (Feb. 20-21, 2017) with a total team score of 886 (+22). The Bobcats improved upon a first-round score of 296 (+8) with a 289 (+1) in the second, then carded a final-round score of 301 (+13). Ohio tied for the tournament lead with three eagles, ranked seventh with 156 pars and eighth with 40 birdies. Then-sophomore Ben Sattler (Liberty Township, Ohio) took 11th place to rank as Ohio's top finisher. He shot a final-round 76 (+4) to bring his total score to 217 (+1). Sattler shot a 73 (+1) in the first round and a 68 (-4) in the second. He finished -1 on the par 3s and -3 on the par 5s and ranked second in the field with 13 birdies.
Host William & Mary won the event in 2017 with a total team score of 852 (-12) after tallying rounds of 281 (-7), 286 (-2) and 285 (-3).
Ohio opened its 2018 spring slate with a fifth-place finish at the 2018 Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, besting No. 5-seeded Drake, 4-1-1 on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at Lake Jovita Country Club. On Monday (Feb. 12), the Bobcats bounced back from a 4-2 loss to No. 2-seeded Eastern Michigan with a 4-1-1 triumph over No. 6-seeded DePaul on the first day of competition for the match play event. Sattler and redshirt senior Tom Nettles (McMurray, Pa.) each went 3-0-0 in their respective matchups to help the Bobcats take fifth.
Up next for the Bobcats will be their lone tournament in the month of March, as Ohio heads to North Carolina to play in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 9-11) at Pinehurst No. 8.
