3:30 p.m. | Ohio vs. Rio Grande | Convocation Center | Athens, Ohio | Live Stats
ATHENS, Ohio– The Ohio men's basketball team will unofficially open its 2018-19 season on Saturday (Nov. 3) with an exhibition game against Rio Grande at the Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
Saturday's contest is a part of a Dad's Weekend doubleheader with the men's game against Rio Grande taking place after Ohio women's basketball's exhibition game against Walsh at 1 p.m. For tickets call 1-800-575-CATS (2287), or click here. Those who attend either game will be treated to the Halftime Dogs Flying Disc Show.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Ohio IMG Sports Network, with 'Voice of the Bobcats' Russ Eisenstein and Rob Cornelius on the call. Radio pregame coverage is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET with 'Countdown To Tipoff.'
It will be the first time Bobcat fans will be able to lay eyes on the Bobcats' nine newcomers – transfers Connor Murrell (Sioux City, Iowa), Jarrell Reeves (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Antonio Cowart, Jr. (McComb, Miss.), and freshman Jason Preston (Orlando, Fla.), Nate Springs (Charlotte, N.C.), Torey James (Hickory, N.C.), John Tenerowicz (Cleveland, Ohio), Chris McGraw (Columbus, Ohio) and Mason McMurray (Stow, Ohio).
Fans will also get their first look at redshirt freshman forward Ben Vander Plas (Ripon, Wis.), who missed all of last season due to injury.
Returning for the Bobcats in 2018-19 will be senior guard Jordan Dartis (Newark, Ohio) – an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection each of the past two seasons – as well as guard Teyvion Kirk (Joilet, Ill.), who garnered MAC All-Freshman Team honors in 2017-18, as well as led the Bobcats in points per game (15.3) and steals (42).
Senior forward Doug Taylor (Columbus, Ohio) and guard/forward Gavin Block (Lincoln, Ill.) will also be back for the Bobcats. Taylor led the squad last season with 61 blocks and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Block added 8.5 points and a team-leading 106 assists.
Also returning for Ohio this season is forward Jason Carter (Johnstown, Ohio), who missed all but three games last year due to injury after earning a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2016-17.
Ohio has won 67 games over the past four seasons under fifth-year head coach Saul Phillips and made back-to-back MAC Tournament semifinal appearances in 2016 and '17. The Bobcats advanced to the College Basketball Invitational Semifinals in 2016. Ohio has tallied 10 All-MAC selections over the last four years under Phillips.
The RedStorm are coming off of a 10-20 season and a 5-12 record in the River States Conference, falling one game short of qualifying for the league's post-season tournament. Only five players, led by sophomore guard Trey Kelley and junior swingman Greg Wallace, return from last season's team. Kelley averaged 7.2 points and shot 37.6 percent from three-point range, while Wallace averaged 5.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per outing.
Ohio opens the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 7 against Wilberforce. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN3. For tickets call 1-800-575-CATS (2287), or click here.
