The Ohio field hockey team (4-10, 2-2) fought hard against #3 Duke (13-4, 5-1), highlighted by senior goalkeeper Alex Pennington's (Easton, Pa.) 14 saves.
Duke registered their first shot 50 seconds in, setting the tone for the game. In the thirteenth minute, the Blue Devils scored during their first penalty corner, quickly followed by another goal in the 16th minute.
Starting at the 21st minute, Duke earned five penalty corners in three minutes, shooting six times, three of which Pennington saved. In the 32nd minute, Duke extended their lead with their third goal of the half.
"I love the challenge of such a high level team," said Pennington. " I knew I had to give it my all."
The Blue Devils started the second half the same way, shooting in the 35th minute. Pennington accumulated four more saves before senior forward Emma Eggleston (Houston, Texas) registered the Bobcats' first shot of the day during their first penalty corner in the 54th minute.
"It's hard to get a shot off against a number three team," said head coach Ali Johnstone. "I'm really impressed that we were able to do so."
Duke scored their fourth goal of the day in the 64th minute, but the Bobcats weren't done fighting. With a penalty corner called just before the clock ran out, Ohio kept the ball in the circle for three corners and two shots on goal before the end of the game.
Up next, Ohio hits the road for their last regular season game to play the Miami Redhawks at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 28.
