PHILADELPHIA -- The Ohio field hockey team (0-1) fell to host La Salle (1-0), 2-0, today in the 2018 regular season opener at Hank DeVincet Field. The contest marked the debut of first-year head coach Ali Johnstone on the Bobcats' bench.
The Bobcats outshot the Explorers, 19-8, putting 15 shots on goal.
Sophomore midfielder Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) led Ohio with six shots -- all of which were on goal -- in her Ohio debut after transferring from Louisville. Sophomore midfielder Annmarie Hoppel (Fredericksburg, Va.) posted four shots, with two coming on goal. Freshman midfielder Ashley Wilbur (Louisville, Ky.) recorded three shots -- including two on goal. Sophomore defender Claire Buckey (Powell, Ohio) posted two shots on goal.
La Salle took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when sophomore midfielder Amber Blackshear scored what proved to be the winner on a scrum in front of the cage off of a corner opportunity.
The Explorers extended their advantage to 2-0 in the 54th minute when sophomore midfielder/forward Rialee Allen backhanded a shot from eight feet away from the right side.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Provost tallied 15 saves in 70 shutout minutes -- including 10 in the first half.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sophia Boothby (Spotsylvania, Va.) made two saves for the Bobcats in 70 minutes of work.
Ohio closes out the first weekend of the regular season with a trip to West Long Branch, N.J. to take on Monmouth on Sunday (Aug. 26) at So Sweet A Cat Field at noon EST.
