AVON, Ohio – The Ohio Baseball team (20-34) was eliminated from the Mid-American Conference Tournament by Northern Illinois (20-35), 6-3, on Friday evening at Sprenger Stadium. The game was Ohio's second of the day, coming after a 17 inning win over Miami.
Freshman RHP Eamon Horwedel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was phenomenal in a spot start for Ohio. Horwedel went 6.1 innings and had a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. Horwedel allowed three earned runs and struck out three batters. Horwedel was given the loss and fell to 0-5.
Redshirt junior Tony Iero (North Canton, Ohio) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning and fanned one batter.
In his last collegiate at-bat, senior INF Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) ripped an RBI single up the middle. Rott was 3-for-5 in his final game.
Redshirt junior Ryan Sargent (Algonquin, Ill.) had a double and one RBI for Ohio. Freshman INF Zyon Avery (Indianpolis, Ind.) also ripped a double and ended the day 2-for-3. Redshirt INF Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) had two hits.
Ohio took the lead in the second on a Sargent groundout, and then added on to their lead in the sixth when Avery scored on a wild pitch.
NIU got on the board in the sixth when Malik Peters scored on a Dylan Lonteen ground out.
The Huskies tied the game in the seventh with a Jordan Larson single up the middle. NIU tooke the lead on a passed ball before Tommy Szczasny made it 6-2 with a three-run home run to right field.
Rott's single to center field scored Sargent in the top of the ninth but Ohio was unable to move in other runners over.
