CLEVELAND -- Ohio baseball redshirt senior designated hitter Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) has been named the Mid-American Conferece Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of April 16-23, 2018, as annnounced by the league office on Wednesday (April 25).
Klein's selection gives the Bobcats two Scholar Athlete of the Week honorees in as many weeks as Ohio softball junior infielder Alex Day (Hilliard, Ohio) earned MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week honors last week.
Klein helped Ohio (19-21, 7-8 MAC) take its MAC weekend series from rival Kent State on the road last weekend at Olga A. Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium. Klein came through with a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the 12th inning to push Ohio to a big 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Golden Flashes on Saturday (April 21) to even the weekend series. Over five games total last week, he posted a .579 slugging percentage to tie for the team lead, collected 11 total bases to tie for the team lead, drove in a team-high eight runs and ranked third on the squad with five hits – including a double, a triple and a home run. Klein notched his fourth home run of the 2018 season last Wednesday (April 18) against longtime rival Marshall at Bob Wren Stadium, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning.
Ohio looks to keep pace in the MAC race when it visits archrival Miami this weekend (April 27-29) at McKie Field at Hayden Park. 'Voice of the Bobcats' Russ Eisenstein and Max McDulin will have the call of the action on WOUB 1340 AM and online on OhioBobcats.com via Stretch Internet.
