TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (3-13, 1-5 MAC) fell 80-65 at Toledo (12-4, 4-2 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Senior
Kennedi Watkins (Ballwin, Mo.) led Ohio with 25 points; shooting 9-for17 from the field, 2-for-3 from the arc and 5-for-5 from the line. Watkins scored 23 of her points in the second half. Graduate student
Anyssa Jones (Westerville, Ohio) tallied a season-high 16 points. Watkins and Jones recorded a team-high three steals each.
Sophomore
Asiah Baxter (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the team in rebounding with five boards. Baxter also scored a career-high 11 points. Graduate student
Aliah McWhorter (Cincinnati, Ohio) added nine points for the Bobcats while sophomore
Bailey Tabeling (Seymour, Ind.) finished with a team-high three assists.
Ohio started the game off strong, going on a 7-0 run off baskets from Baxter and Watkins. Toledo began to close in on Ohio's lead about halfway through the quarter. Jones helped the Bobcats maintain its small lead over the Rockets, making tough shots in the paint. Ohio led Toledo 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Ohio and Toledo traded baskets in the beginning of the second quarter. The two teams were tied at 17-17 with 7:48 to go. The Rockets found a lot of success beyond the arc, allowing them to take a significant lead over the Bobcats. The Bobcats faced several obstacles and did make a field goal for over six minutes. However, the Bobcats utilized the opportunities they were given and went 6-0 from the line over almost the final two minutes of the quarter. Heading into the locker room, Toledo held a 35-26 lead over Ohio.
Toledo dominated offensively throughout the third quarter, continuing to be dangerous beyond the arc. Despite a great quarter by Watkins, the Bobcats allowed the Rockets too many opportunities on offense and were unable to significantly shorten their lead. At the end of the third quarter, Ohio trailed Toledo 59-42.
Despite outscoring Toledo in the fourth quarter, Ohio was unable to catch up with the Rockets. Toledo went on to win the game, 80-65.
The Bobcats will be back in action at Buffalo on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
