PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – It's officially football game day in Athens! Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL
Sept. 7 / vs South Alabama / Athens, Ohio / Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium / 6 p.m. ET  / ESPN+ / Watch / Listen / Live State / Digital Guide / Tickets 

The Ohio football team (0-1) returns to Athens for the first time in 2024 in Saturday, Sept. 7 when the Bobcats welcome South Alabama (0-1). Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio opened the season last Saturday at Syracuse. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro (Tempe, Ariz.) made his second collegiate start, going 18-for-30 on 181 passing yards. On the ground, Navarro recorded 16 carries on 33 yards. Graduate student running back Anthony Tyus III (Portage, Mich.) scored both of Ohio's touchdowns, finishing the game with 203 rushing yards and 16 attempts. 
 
Defensively, junior safety Austin Brawley (Massilon, Ohio) led the Bobcats with 12 total tackles, including nine solo stops. Graduate student linebacker Blake Leake (Culpeper, Va.) was right behind him with seven tackles. Senior cornerback Tank Pearson (Oxford, Miss.) snagged the first interception of the season for Ohio and finished the day with four tackles. 
 
Sophomore kicker Gianni Spetic (Chardon, Ohio) opened the season strong, going 3-for-3 on field goals and 1-1 on PATs. Spetic also recorded 389 yards on six kickoffs. 

South Alabama is coming off a 52-38 loss to North Texas in the season opener at home. Quarterback Gio Lopez passed for 432 yards on the night and rushed for an additional 62 to get to 494 yards of total offense, setting the South Alabama  single-game records for passing yards and total offense.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Sept. 1-2 / at 2024 A-Ga-Ming Invitational / Kewadin, Mich. / A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort / 9 a.m. ET  / Live Results 

The Ohio women's golf teams opens the 2024-25 season this weekend at the 2024 A-Ga-Ming Invitational Sept. 1-2. The two-day event is hosted by Central Michigan at the A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort in Kewadin, Mich., with both days set to start at 9 a.m. The Bobcats will play 36 holes on Sunday and conclude the weekend with 18 holes on Monday. 

14 teams will head to Michigan to compete in this years event. Along with Ohio and host CMU, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne, Loyola Chicago, Niagara, Detroit Mercy, Western Michigan, Bellarmine, Northern Kentucky, Green Bay, Bowling Green, Bradley and Chicago State will all compete in the tournament. 

After the first two rounds of play on Sunday, Ohio sits in seventh place.

The Ohio soccer team (2-1-1) is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when the Bobcats host Marshall (1-2-1) at Chessa Field. First touch is set for 4 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a commanding 5-0 victory over Valpo on Sept. 1. Individually, Murray (Chicago, Ill.), led Ohio with with three goals on four shots. Junior Ella Deevers (Streetsboro, Ohio) added one goal on one attempt, while freshman Lillian Weller (Xenia, Ohio) also had a goal on one shot. Sophomore Jaimason Brooker(Powell, Ohio) added two assists, while junior Maia Soulis(Sylvania, Ohio), freshman Iro Fakinou (Athens, Greece) and freshman Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) all recorded one assist each. Burchett also recorded three shot attempts with two on goal

In net, Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) got the start, playing all 90 minutes, while picking up her second shutout of the season and making one save.

Marshall is coming off a 1-0 win against Belmont on Sept. 1 in Huntington, W. Va.

The Ohio volleyball team (2-1) hits the road for the first time in 2024 after a successful opening weekend. The Bobcats will head to High Point, N.C. for the 2024 High Point Invitational Sept. 6-7. Ohio opens the weekend on Friday, Sept. 6 when they take on host High Point (2-1) at 6 p.m. inside the Millis Center. The Bobcats then conclude the weekend on Saturday, Sept. 7 when Ohio takes on Mercer (3-0). First serve is set for 3 p.m. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the 2024 Bobcat Invitational in Athens last weekend. Ohio defeated Xavier and App State before falling to Wright State on Saturday. After the event, junior Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) and sophomore Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) were selected as tournament All-Stars for Ohio.

High Point is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the DaTerra Classic in Provo, Utah where they defeated Fairfield and Southeastern Louisiana, before falling to host #16 BYU. Meanwhile, Mercer enters the weekend with a 3-0 mark after picking up three victories at the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. Mercer defeated Quinnipiac, Rhode Island and host North Florida.

The Ohio field hockey (0-2) team is back in action for two more matches this weekend when they head to East Lansing, Mich. On Saturday, Sept. 7, the Bobcats will take on Vermont (0-2) at 1 p.m. at Ralph Young Field. Ohio is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they take on host Michigan State (1-1). First touch is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen on BIG+. 

Ohio is coming off an opening weekend where they took on Stanford and No. 20 UAlbany at neutral sites. 

Vermont enters the weekend with an 0-2 record after falling to Lafayette and No. 9 Rutgers. Meanwhile, Michigan State enters the weekend with a 1-1 record after defeating UC Davis, before falling to Call in overtime.
