PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –It's the final few days of 2024 and Ohio men's basketball is set to close out the year in the Convo, while women's basketball and wrestling will kick off 2025 in Athens. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints.

The Ohio men's basketball team (5-6, 0-0 MAC) is back in action this week to close out non conference play and open MAC play. The week begins on Monday, Dec. 30 as the Bobcats close out 2024 with a matchup against Muskingum (5-5). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats begin Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan (5-6, 0-0 MAC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside McGuirk Arena and can also be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 12 day break, last playing on Dec. 18 when the Bobcats defeated Austin Peay, 78-58 inside the Convo. Senior forward AJ Clayton led Ohio with 22 points and six rebounds, while going 5-of-6 fro three, and junior guard Jackson Paveletzke added 18 points and a game-high 11 assists for his fourth double double of the season. 

Muskingum enters the matchup with the Bobcats with a 5-5 record after falling to Allegheny on Dec. 17 at home. Central Michigan is currently 5-6 and is coming off a loss at Arizona on Dec. 21. CMU will take on Cleary on Monday night before hosting Ohio on Saturday.

Ohio women's basketball (2-8, 0-0 MAC) kicks off 2025 with some MAC play in Athens on Wednesday, Jan. 1 when Ohio hosts Akron (6-6, 0-0). Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is then back on the road on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they head to DeKalb, Ill. to take on Northern Illinois (6-5, 0-0 MAC). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET inside the NIU Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a competitive matchup at Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kennedi Watkins led the team with 15 points, finishing 7-for-14 from the field. Sophomore Bailey Tabeling and senior Kate Dennis  added eight points each for the Bobcats.

Akron comes to Athens with a 6-6 record and is coming off a win on Dec. 28 against Miami (Hamilton). NIU hosts Ohio with a 6-5 record. The Huskies are coming off a win over Viterbo on Dec. 28 and will travel to Toledo on Wednesday before hosting the Bobcats.

Thw Ohio wresting team (3-2, 1-0 MAC) kicks off 2025 with another MAC dual in the Convo. The Bobcats are set to host Cleveland State (0-2, 0-0 MAC) on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. 

Ohio is coming off a thrilling week that saw the Bobcats compete three times in six days and going 2-1 overall, defeating Bloomsburg and Gardner-Webb. Redshirt senior Jordan Greer was named the MAC West Wrestler of the Week for his performances that week. 

Ranked #27, Greer had an outstanding week for the Ohio Bobcats, finishing a dominant performance with a flawless 3-0 record in the heavyweight class. Greer began his week with two back-to-back dual meets, first overpowering Dominic Petracci of Drexel with a commanding 19-4 technical fall. He carried that momentum the next day, pinning Tyler McCatham of Bloomsburg in a dominant first-period fall, securing the victory in 42 seconds. That win helped lead Ohio to its first shutout dual since December 2021.To close out the week, Greer continued his dominance, taking down Mason Blue of Gardner-Webb with another impressive first-period fall, this time at 1:20. With three decisive victories, Greer not only solidified his standing in the heavyweight division but also helped propel Ohio to an outstanding 2-1 record for their week of duals.

Cleveland comes to Ohio with an 0-2 dual record and is coming off a 35-9 defeat at home against Purdue on Dec. 18.
